In 1951, everything began almost quietly. Inside the elegant halls of the historic Sanremo Casino, singers performed while the audience sat around small café tables, finishing dinner and sipping coffee. Waiters moved between tables. No one imagined they were witnessing the birth of a cultural phenomenon.
Someone later called it “the great escape” — an escape into music and lightness after the hardships of war. It was not taken too seriously at first. And perhaps that is exactly why it could grow so freely.
The roots of the festival go back even further, to 1931, when a Christmas song competition was held in the casino. The rule that still defines it today is simple: only songs composed by Italian authors, performed in Italian or in regional dialects, may compete.
Over seven decades, the festival transformed into a powerful media machine — producing unforgettable songs, shaping Italian identity, and, yes, occasionally stirring scandals and debates. Because Sanremo does not only entertain; it mirrors society.
Today, the beating heart of the festival is the iconic Teatro Ariston, where Italy gathers each February to listen, judge, celebrate, and discuss.
The Pearl of the Riviera dei Fiori
Often anglicized as San Remo, this seaside town lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the Ligurian Alps, near the French border and not far from Nice.
Its strategic position protects it from northern winds, creating a mild microclimate with low rainfall — perfect conditions for flowers and even subtropical plants to flourish.
This is why Sanremo is called the pearl of the Riviera dei Fiori — the Riviera of Flowers.
During festival week, the city’s precious flower production becomes part of the spectacle. At first, flowers simply decorated the stage. Later, bouquets were handed to performers — initially only to female artists. In recent editions, that gesture has evolved, and flowers are now given to male performers as well, reflecting a subtle but meaningful cultural shift.

Liberty Elegance and Belle Époque Echoes
Walking through the city center, one of the first landmarks to visit is the majestic Sanremo Casino, designed in 1905 by the Parisian architect Eugène Ferret.
With Murano glass chandeliers, oriental-style paintings, and richly decorated halls — including a sixteenth-century room with an ornate wooden coffered ceiling — the casino still radiates Belle Époque elegance.
It remains one of Italy’s most important historic gambling houses, alongside the Casino di Venezia and the Casinò de la Vallée.
Between 1951 and 1976, the festival itself was hosted here for 26 years.
Climbing Toward Silence – La Pigna and Madonna della Costa
To step away from the city’s rhythm, walk uphill through the palm-filled Giardini Regina Elena. Stone staircases cross the garden terraces, leading toward the historic district of La Pigna — a maze of narrow medieval alleyways known as “carrugi.”
From there, continue climbing to the Santuario della Madonna della Costa, about 100 meters above sea level. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking views over the harbor, rooftops, and bell towers rising toward the sky.
