Nice, the City of Light and Mediterranean Life

Nice, the gateway to the Côte d’Azur

Henri Matisse, the world-famous French painter, once said about Nice:
“When I realized that I could see this light every morning again, I couldn’t believe my luck. I decided not to leave Nice, and I practically lived my whole life here.”

And indeed, anyone who experiences this magical light, where the blue sea meets the sky, can easily understand why the artist could never leave.

As soon as I arrived in Nice, the first sign that greeted me proudly declared: “Nice, the gateway to the Côte d’Azur.” And how true it is! From the very first moment, you feel that the magic of the French Riviera begins here: the play of light, the scent of the sea, the Mediterranean colors, and the elegant presence of history.

The morning naturally starts at one of the world’s finest food markets, the Cours Saleya Market, where a colorful abundance of fresh fruits, cheeses, vegetables, and flowers awaits. From here, strolling through the narrow streets of the Old Town, you instantly feel at home—even if you’re only here for a day. Every corner holds a discovery: a tiny café, a hidden art gallery, or a centuries-old building whispering stories of the past.

The Promenade des Anglais and the Blue Chairs

The symbol of the city is the Promenade des Anglais, a 6.5 km seaside promenade lined with grand 19th- and 20th-century palaces on one side and the endless sea on the other. I’ve walked it many times, always stopping at one of the famous blue chairs to sit down, slow down, and simply admire the infinite horizon.

Flavors that Awaken the Senses

Among the seaside restaurants, one of my favorites is Le Galet. Bathed in azure energy, it awakened all my senses. My choice was the beef tartare, my husband’s the mixed seafood fritto, and dessert was pure bliss: the “Gigante” caramel cream. If you have lunch here, don’t rush—let the sunshine and the sea embrace you.

Culture and History

But Nice is unforgettable not only because of the seaside and cuisine. A visit to the Opéra de Nice Côte d’Azur felt like time travel: the ornate façade, the Montserrat Caballé hall, the three levels of boxes, and the sparkling amphitheater all whispered of centuries of art and elegance.

Then there’s the cultural face of the city: the Musée Masséna, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Notre Dame Basilica, and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, where rabbits hop around in the gardens. The Matisse Museum is an unmissable stop: walking through the painter’s former home feels like stepping directly into his colorful world.

Views and Secrets

The Castle Hill Park (Colline du Château) is the setting of countless postcards: the waterfall, the fortress, and the breathtaking panorama of the Côte d’Azur. From here, the entire city unfolds before you, and in a moment you understand why so many fall in love with Nice.

An Evening Wine Experience

And if you get hungry in the evening, let me share a secret: on my friend Louise’s recommendation, we visited La Treille Wine Bar (7 Rue Saint Augustin). The selection of wines ranges from prestigious estates to hidden gems, and the tasting menu was sheer harmony: foie gras, lemon ravioli, and baked pasta—a true symphony of flavors, elegant yet comforting.

Nice, a City That Always Welcomes You Back

Nice is not just a dot on the map. It is a way of life, where light, colors, flavors, and history converge. There is always something new to discover here—be it a hidden alleyway, the scent of the morning market, or the quiet of a museum.

And who knows? Maybe next time I’ll arrive during the famous Nice Carnival, to once again feel the city’s vibrant magic.
