I have always believed that the best way to discover a city’s true character is through its markets. Whenever I arrive in a new place, the very first thing I do is visit the local market. Strolling among the stalls, you don’t just find fresh produce, colorful flowers, and the scent of cheeses—you also encounter the rhythm of daily life and the soul of the town itself.

The markets of the French Riviera, much like the village markets of Tuscany, are the beating heart of their towns. These lively squares are open-air theaters, where locals greet each other with a cheerful Bonjour!, and travelers try to absorb the rhythms of everyday life on the Riviera. I have my personal favorites, and today I’ll take you on a journey through the markets that capture my heart every time.
1) Nice – Cours Saleya & Liberation Market
Nice is one of the most vibrant cities on the French Riviera, and its markets reflect exactly this energy. Cours Saleya is perhaps the most famous: nestled in the heart of the Old Town, it transforms with every season.

Under striped awnings, stalls overflow with Provençal herbs, ripe tomatoes, olives, cheeses, and grapes as large as golf balls. The air is filled with the scent of fresh produce and the cheerful calls of vendors. Among the treasures here is my all-time favorite cheese: Roquefort AOP Papillon. Try it paired with pear or fig jam—it’s a true taste of France that lingers in memory long after the market stroll is over.
One of its highlights is the flower market, recognized by France’s National Council of Culinary Arts as one of the country’s most beautiful. I still remember buying a bunch of pussy willows one February—they remain in my vase to this day, looking as fresh as the morning I purchased them. The colors, fragrances, and oversized bouquets always tempt me to buy just one more… or two.

In summer, the Cours Saleya never sleeps: by night it becomes a craft market, where only authentic artisan creations are sold—no tourist trinkets here. Mondays are my favorite, when the square transforms into a Brocante, or antique market, filled with vintage posters, books, glassware, and treasures that feel like stepping back in time.
If it’s seafood you crave, head to the Liberation Market, a little further from the Old Town. Beloved by locals, it offers the day’s catch straight from fishermen’s baskets: oysters, sea urchins, and gleaming fresh fish.
2) Antibes – Cours Massena
In charming Antibes, authenticity reigns supreme. The Cours Massena covered market is at the town’s heart, buzzing with life each morning.
Here you’ll find everything Provence can offer: cheeses, olives, olive oil, fruits, vegetables, charcuterie, and fragrant spice pyramids. Most stands are run by local producers, though traders also bring delights from nearby regions.

Prices are slightly higher than in Nice or Cannes, but the quality—and the atmosphere—make it worth every cent. Shopping here feels like stepping into the kitchen of Provence itself.
3) Saint-Tropez – Place des Lices
Saint-Tropez might be synonymous with luxury, but for me, its soul lies in the Place des Lices Market. With my friend Louise, I often take the short train ride from Nice (just 20 minutes) to explore this treasure.

Here you’ll find everything: golden baguettes, pastries, sausages, olive oil, bundles of fresh herbs, and dried spice blends. The vibe is lively yet effortlessly chic—just like Saint-Tropez itself.
The market also has a wonderful antique section, offering vintage tins (the French love using them for herbs), retro posters, glassware, handbags, and lamps—perfect for collectors of unique finds.
Once a year, during the Grande Braderie (late October), over 230 boutiques across Saint-Tropez join a massive clearance sale. This end-of-season tradition is the town’s way of making space for new collections arriving in March. If you’re lucky enough to visit then, you can score true Riviera treasures at a fraction of the price.
4) Villefranche-sur-Mer – Jardin Binon
This small seaside gem is one of my favorite Riviera towns, and its Jardin Binon market captures pure Provençal charm. Local vendors sell tapenade, cheeses, seasonal produce, and even steaming pans of paella.

On Sundays, the square transforms into an antique market, drawing vendors and collectors from all across the Riviera. Nostalgia and sea breezes mingle, creating an atmosphere both relaxed and irresistible.
5) Cannes – Forville Market
Cannes may be known for its film festival, but its Marché Forville deserves a spotlight of its own. Located near La Croisette and the historic Le Suquet, this market is a feast for the senses.

You’ll find organic vegetables, seasonal fruits, fresh fish, and fine cheeses. Thanks to Cannes’ proximity to Italy, many stalls also offer Italian delicacies—perfect for those who love the best of both Mediterranean worlds.
6) Menton – The Citrus Capital
Known as the “citrus capital of France,” Menton’s covered market is filled with golden lemons, mandarins, and oranges. The famous Menton lemons are used in local jams, liqueurs, and pastries, infusing the town with their unmistakable fragrance.

Compared to the lively bustle of Nice or Cannes, the pace here is slower, more relaxed. At the fish stalls, you’ll find sardines, shrimp, and shellfish fresh from the Mediterranean—just another reason to linger in this sun-soaked town.
✨ For me, the markets of the French Riviera are much more than shopping destinations. They are living stories, filled with memories, aromas, and flavors. Each market is unique, yet all share the same joy of life that beats at the heart of Provence and the Riviera.
