Let’s be honest: no one dreams of traffic jams or hunting for parking spots when planning a getaway to the French Riviera. We imagine sun-kissed beaches, charming promenades, and the glitter of Monaco – not the frustration of navigating narrow streets. That’s why, during my trip to the Côte d’Azur, I chose to leave the car behind and explore everything by train. And honestly? It was the best decision I made.
Why Train Travel Works Best on the French Riviera
If you’re planning to visit iconic Riviera towns like Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Menton, or even cross the border to Ventimiglia in Italy, the train is your golden ticket. The TER (Trains Express Régionaux) line runs parallel to the coast and connects all major destinations, offering frequent, affordable, and scenic service.
I based myself in Cannes, and one of my favorite day trips was to Antibes. I bought a round-trip ticket from the machine at the station – no queue, no fuss. The cost? Just €9.60 return. Trains left roughly every 10 minutes, so there was no pressure to rush. I simply checked the display to ensure the next train stopped at Antibes (not all do, so it’s worth a quick look).
The journey took around 10 minutes, and even in that short time, I was impressed. The train was clean, air-conditioned, and surprisingly spacious. Compared to regional trains in other countries, the French TER holds its own – and then some.
Tips for Riding the TER Like a Local
If you’re new to train travel in France, here are a few things I learned:
- No seat reservations needed. These are local trains with open seating – just hop on.
- No need for First Class. Second class is spacious and comfortable enough for short trips.
- Validate your ticket before boarding! Look for the yellow machines at the station. Skipping this step could mean a fine.
- Sit on the left-hand side if you’re traveling from Nice to Menton – the sea views are incredible.
The Most Scenic Railway Section
The Nice to Monaco segment is pure magic. The train hugs the coastline, revealing glimpses of turquoise waters, luxurious villas, and dramatic cliffs. From the window, you see pebble beaches, sailing boats, and the sparkling Mediterranean stretching into the horizon.
Further along, Menton feels like a pastel painting come to life, and just beyond it, Ventimiglia awaits on the Italian side of the border – a perfect blend of two cultures in a single train ride.
