Descending into the Paris Catacombs – A Journey into the City of the Dead

When I wrote about our 24 hours in Paris, I didn’t mention one more experience we had the afternoon before. Together with my husband and Louise, we ventured into the realm of the dead beneath Paris – the famous Catacombs.

Beneath the sparkling lights and lively boulevards lies another world: a silent empire of bones. Though less popular than the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, the Paris Catacombs still attract more than half a million visitors each year, who descend below the surface to witness one of the world’s most haunting ossuaries.

The Catacombs were created in the late 18th century as a solution to the overcrowded cemeteries of Paris. Millions of human remains were carefully relocated here, far from sight, deep underground. Today, the Catacombs are an official Paris museum – and even featured in pop culture (yes, Emily in Paris also went down here!).

The part open to visitors is a 1.5 km underground trail, which is only a fraction of the vast and forbidden network of tunnels that extend beneath the city. It is estimated that the bones here represent the remains of about six million people – nearly three times the current population of Paris.

Located in the 14th arrondissement, on the Left Bank of the Seine, the Catacombs are within walking distance of other highlights such as the Panthéon, the Luxembourg Gardens, or Montparnasse Cemetery – making them a fascinating stop on the same day’s itinerary.

After descending 131 steps about 20 meters underground, we entered narrow corridors where only one person can pass at a time. Dim lamps light the stone walls, creating an atmosphere of suspense – every corner feels like it might suddenly reveal bones. And then, the moment comes: the chambers of skulls and tibias, carefully arranged into heart-shaped patterns and walls of bones stacked behind them.

It is a surreal experience – standing so close to human remains without knowing who they belonged to. A walk that makes you reflect on life, history, and mortality.

The Paris Catacombs are not for everyone. If you dislike enclosed spaces, suffer from claustrophobia, or prefer lighthearted attractions, this may not be the right stop for you. But if you are fascinated by history, hidden places, and wish to discover one of Paris’s darkest secrets, the Catacombs are unforgettable.

Exploring them gave a deeper meaning to our short stay in Paris. For a city known as the City of Light, descending into the City of the Dead adds an unforgettable contrast – a reminder that beauty and darkness have always coexisted here.
