Saturnia – When a Sunday Escape Was the Only Remedy I Needed
Last Sunday I reached that point of the month when I simply needed to stop.
November always hits hard — long days, endless deadlines — and December is still ahead, when I’m expected to run at 150%. Instead of staying in bed and trying to ignore the world, I chose something better: a spontaneous escape to Saturnia, the world-famous natural hot springs in Southern Tuscany.

The Maremma region never disappoints. Earlier this summer I explored the area when visiting the Tarot Garden, and that’s when Saturnia caught my attention — a place I had dreamed of for so long. With a name like “Saturnia”, you’d almost think it belongs on another planet… and honestly, arriving there feels exactly like stepping into another world.
A 3,000-Year-Old Thermal Miracle
The thermal water of Saturnia has been bubbling from the earth for more than 3,000 years, known for its calming and healing properties. And on that particular Sunday, that was precisely what I needed:
silence, warmth, and a few hours of pure, undisturbed relaxation.

The Romans once considered sulfur-rich water a divine gift, believing in its power to heal both body and mind. After experiencing it myself, I completely understand why.
The water flows at a constant 37.5°C, making it ideal for year-round bathing. Every second, around 800 liters of fresh, mineral-rich water emerges from deep within the earth, fed by the slopes of Monte Amiata. Rich in sulfur and calcium, Saturnia’s waters are said to:
- aid digestion
- ease respiratory issues
- relax muscles
- help with joint inflammation
- and restore certain skin conditions
Whether or not you come for wellness, the feeling is undeniably therapeutic.

Cascate del Mulino — Tuscany’s Most Photographed Natural Wonder
Saturnia’s most iconic spot, Cascate del Mulino, is exactly as magical as the photos suggest — if not more.
This natural waterfall flows into a series of turquoise, steaming pools, shaped over time by white limestone terraces. It’s no surprise that since Instagram’s rise, Cascate del Mulino has become one of Tuscany’s most photographed gems. The setting feels surreal: hot water cascading over stone, steam rising in the cool air, and nature creating a spa more perfect than anything man-made.
The Legend of Jupiter’s Lightning
A medieval legend claims that the hot springs were born exactly where Jupiter’s lightning struck the earth during a battle with Saturn. The „wounds” of that lightning, they say, became the Cascate del Mulino waterfalls.

Myth or not, it adds a beautiful layer of mystique to the place — and somehow, when you’re sitting there in the steaming turquoise water, the story feels surprisingly believable.
The Best Things in Life Truly Are Free
Sitting in the warm pools of Saturnia, surrounded by silence and steam, I remembered something important: the best things in life really are free — love, family, peace, and yes, these breathtaking natural baths.
It was only a few hours, but exactly enough to recharge, reconnect, and breathe again in the middle of the November chaos.
