The primary goal was to export bananas to the United States, where demand for tropical fruits was steadily rising. The company significantly impacted Costa Rica’s economic and infrastructural development, building railroads, ports, and creating jobs on the plantations.
In Costa Rica, banana plantations are primarily concentrated along the Caribbean coast, particularly in Limón province, though there are also plantations on the Pacific coast. The humid tropical climate, abundant rainfall, and fertile soil provide excellent conditions for the growth of banana plants.
Banana Tours in Puerto Limón
In the Caribbean port city of Puerto Limón, visitors can embark on a banana tour to taste some of the world’s finest bananas. About 43% of the bananas grown here are exported to the United States, while the rest are shipped to 38 other countries worldwide. Visiting one of the many banana plantations, which employ a total of 34,000 workers, is a fascinating experience. The enormous banana bunches growing on the trees are wrapped in blue plastic bags, which are perforated to create a “mini greenhouse” for each banana tree. These bags help the fruit ripen faster, as the temperature inside the bag is higher than the surrounding air.
A Unique Harvest Process
During harvest, workers hang the ripe banana bunches on a rail system about two meters above the ground, which runs between rows of banana trees. The bunches are then pushed along this rail to the packing stations. Incredibly, within just an hour of being harvested, the fresh bananas are packed in crates and ready to be loaded onto container ships.
