Namibia. This vast country on Africa’s southwestern coast is like nowhere else in the world. It is three times the size of the United Kingdom but has a population of just 2.5 million, making it one of the least densely populated countries on Earth. As a result, it remains a largely untouched landscape and one of the few places on the planet where nature still reigns supreme.

Walvis Bay, Namibia’s stunning coastal city, is a crossroads of nature and culture. The city stands out for its rich marine life, endless desert landscapes, and the opportunities offered by the Atlantic Ocean. This port city is the perfect starting point for exploring the area’s natural wonders while also offering lasting memories of local culture and cuisine.
Currency
Namibia’s official currency is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is equal in value to the South African Rand (ZAR). The two currencies are interchangeable. If you plan to withdraw money for your trip (and this is highly recommended to avoid steep exchange fees and potential ATM scams), it’s best to withdraw Rand rather than Namibian Dollars.
Namibia’s Policies
You may encounter unexpected regulations, such as restrictions on taking photographs for commercial purposes (including blogging) in certain reserves. Researching ahead will help ensure a smooth journey.

History
Walvis Bay’s history is closely tied to the Atlantic Ocean and trade. Portuguese explorers arrived here in the late 1400s, followed by British and German colonizers who transformed it into a strategically important harbor. Incorporated into Namibia in 1994, the city has become a key driver of the country’s economy, especially in fishing and tourism.

Attractions
One of the city’s most famous sights is the lagoon, one of the world’s most significant flamingo and pelican reserves. The Walvis Bay Waterfront offers a modern vibe with its restaurants and shops, ideal for relaxation. Dune 7, the highest sand dune in the area, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, while the local markets showcase authentic Namibian handicrafts.

Walvis Bay serves as an ideal base for exploring the region. Nearby Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets the ocean, offers breathtaking scenery. Swakopmund, the neighboring coastal town, is known for its German colonial architecture and adventurous activities.

The southern boundary of the Skeleton Coast is only about 80–100 kilometers north of Walvis Bay, depending on whether you take the coastal or inland route. This region, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, is renowned for its stark beauty, untouched landscapes, and shipwrecks. Walvis Bay is an excellent starting point for exploring the southern section of the Skeleton Coast, reachable by car in one to two hours. For the northern, more remote areas, longer journeys and guided tours or permits are required.

The Namib Desert
Walvis Bay is known as the gateway to the Namib Desert, with its famous sand dunes and desert landscapes starting right at the city’s edge. The Namib Desert is one of the planet’s most iconic natural wonders and the world’s oldest desert, existing for over 55 million years. Stretching along Namibia’s western coastline for approximately 2,000 kilometers, the Namib Desert’s most renowned attraction is Sossusvlei, home to the world’s tallest sand dunes, some exceeding 300 meters in height. The orange dunes are especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset. Dead Vlei, a salt pan scattered with petrified tree silhouettes, is one of the most photographed spots in the region.
