Just when you think Venice couldn’t be more magical, wait until you experience the Venice Carnival. The floating city transforms completely: unique characters, elaborate costumes, and breathtaking spectacles fill the streets, squares, and bridges. The Venice Carnival is more than a festival—it is a cultural phenomenon that has captivated visitors for centuries.

Visiting the Venice Carnival had long been a cherished dream of mine. The carnival is world-famous, known for its ornate masks and astonishing costumes, yet for me it meant much more: a journey through time, where the past and present of this city blend seamlessly.

The carnival’s history stretches back to 1162, when Venetians gathered in St. Mark’s Square to celebrate a victory of the Venetian Republic. From the 13th century onwards, wearing masks became an essential part of the celebration. Venetians used them to escape the rigid social rules of the time—behind a mask, everyone was equal, regardless of rank, wealth, or background.

However, this freedom did not last forever. In 1797, Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire banned the carnival and the wearing of masks. The tradition disappeared for a long period, until 1979, when the Venice Carnival was officially revived. Since then, it has once again drawn visitors from around the globe.
During my visit, I realized that today the carnival is no longer about celebrating victories over enemies. It is about bringing people together across all social layers. Rich or poor, man or woman—you can become anyone you want here, behind a mask, free of judgment.

Daily programs are available online and on notice boards in St. Mark’s Square next to the main stage. The 2026 Venice Carnival runs from February 7 to 17, with the theme “Olympus – The Origin of Games”, honoring the Olympic spirit that will sweep across Italy during the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics.
One of the carnival’s most iconic symbols is undoubtedly the mask. Traditionally made from papier-mâché and decorated with intricate hand-painted designs, the mask is more than decoration: it is a chance to step out of yourself and become part of the city’s living theatre. Costumes often evoke historical eras or fantastical worlds, creating a visual spectacle at every corner.
To fully experience the carnival, one thing is essential: your own mask. One of my favorite experiences was joining a mask-making workshop, where you can not only create but also understand the cultural significance of this Venetian tradition. (I’ll share a specific tip later on the best place to try it.)

Masked and ready, you can head to St. Mark’s Square, where you can spend hours admiring the elaborate costumes, taking photos, or simply soaking in the atmosphere that surrounds you.
No carnival day is complete without indulging in the local sweets. During the festival, every bakery offers frittelle—small golden-brown dough balls filled with cream or custard—and galani, crisp, sugar-dusted pastries. These flavors are as much a part of the experience as the masks themselves.
In 2026, one of the most anticipated events returns: the Flight of the Angel (Volo dell’Angelo). On the first Sunday of the carnival, a performer dressed as an angel descends dramatically from the Campanile of St. Mark’s, landing in the center of the square. This stunning entrance marks the official start of the celebrations every year.

While the Venice Carnival still carries an image of extravagance and luxury, since its revival it has become far more inclusive and artistic. Mask competitions, fashion shows, and contemporary art installations make the event vibrant and multifaceted.
Getting to Venice and moving around the city during carnival is surprisingly simple. Trains arrive at Santa Lucia Station, and from there, you can explore by vaporetto, water taxi, or yes—even gondolas—to reach the city’s most hidden corners. But I’ll share more about that in a separate story…
During carnival, Venice is not just a city. It is a role, a stage, a dream—and it is an experience everyone should step into at least once in their life. 🎭✨
