Santorini – The postcard comes to life

borito

If there’s one place in the world that was made for a postcard, it’s Santorini. The combination of snow-white houses, blue-domed churches and blood-orange sunsets is not just a sight – it’s a way of life. This Greek island, nestled in the Aegean Sea on the edge of a volcanic caldera, is an island that immediately captivates. Santorini isn’t just a holiday – Santorini is a dream to lose yourself in for a few days (or a lifetime).

History under the ashes
The history of Santorini (in ancient times, Thera) literally lies in layers. One of the most interesting chapters is the volcanic eruption around 1600 BC, which destroyed ancient settlements – including the town of Akrotiri, often called ‘Pompeii of the Aegean’. After the eruption, the island was transformed into a horseshoe shape, creating the famous caldera. The ruined cities can still be visited today, and offer a fascinating insight into the daily life of a civilisation that dates back thousands of years.

Did you know? Santorini has more than 450 churches and chapels, and although the famous blue-domed churches often steal the show, they are just the tip of the iceberg. The island is also home to many other impressive works of religious architecture, such as the church of Panagia Mesiani, the church of St John the Theologian and the church of Anastasi. My personal favourite is the Three Bells of Fira, which fascinates me not only with its beautiful architecture but also with its magnificent views. Santorini’s religious heritage is rich and varied, worth exploring these wonderful churches!
