Rimini – It Started with Rain, Ended in Samba

rimini borito

We arrived in Rimini under pouring rain. Not exactly how you imagine the perfect start to a beach getaway. That first evening, we ducked into a cozy trattoria, ordered seafood pasta and wine, and listened to the rain tapping the windows, quietly wondering: “Is this how the whole vacation will go?”

But by morning, everything had changed. The sun came out, the beaches filled with people, the sand sparkled, and the Adriatic was calm and warm — it was like the city had rewritten itself overnight.

🌅 Morning: History at Every Corner

Rimini’s past doesn’t sit in museums — it lives right on the streets.

The Arch of Augustus, built in 27 BC, still stands tall, like an open book from ancient Rome. The Tiberius Bridge, built between 14 and 21 AD, is still in use today. Crossing it, you can’t help but think of the centuries of footsteps that came before yours.

At Piazza Tre Martiri, the city’s central square, you’ll find a statue of Julius Caesar, commemorating the moment he crossed the Rubicon and chose Rimini as his base. Don’t miss the Torre dell’Orologio, a Renaissance clock tower that’s been keeping time (and tracking the stars and moon phases) since 1750. Look closely — you’ll see four Roman deities carved between the arches and Corinthian columns: Jupiter, Neptune, Minerva, and Apollo.

Not far from there stands Castel Sismondo, once a fortified palace built by Rimini’s lord, Sigismondo Malatesta. Today, only fragments remain — but you can still feel the power it once held.

⛱️ Afternoon: Sand Between the Toes

After soaking up the city’s history, we headed to the beach for something lighter: a barefoot walk on warm sand, seashell hunting, suncream, and gelato. This is Rimini’s other face — the one that promises simplicity, salt air, and slow afternoons.

🌇 Evening: Surprise in the Piazza

As the sun set, the main square transformed. Suddenly there were dancers, drums, feathers — a burst of Brazilian samba right in the heart of Romagna. Capoeira, percussion shows, sequins, and rhythm turned the piazza into a spontaneous street carnival.

Locals danced beside tourists. Some ate pizza, others sipped Aperol — but everyone was smiling. Rimini gave us something we hadn’t planned for. That’s what makes it magical.

🍷 And the Next Day?

You slow down again. You order a piadina stuffed with prosciutto and squacquerone cheese, sip on a glass of Sangiovese, and think: Yes. This is the kind of place you trust to surprise you again and again.

🚗 Day Trip Tip: Rimini is also the perfect base for a day trip to San Marino — one of the world’s smallest and oldest republics. Think cliffside castles, mountaintop views, and tax-free shopping. I wrote more about that adventure here: San Marino Travel Guide: Italy’s Hidden Gem
