Palau – Our 72nd Port of Call

Palau – Our 72nd Port of Call

Where Paradise Becomes Reality

Tucked away in the Pacific Ocean, Palau is one of the smallest and most unknown countries in the world — with just 18,000 inhabitants. And yet, it holds some of the most breathtaking natural wonders you could ever imagine. With crystal-clear lagoons, untouched jungles, and vibrant coral reefs, Palau feels more like a dream than a real destination. The capital of Palau, Ngerulmud, serves as the administrative heart of this island paradise.

Most people have never even heard of it — and that’s exactly what makes it so special. Far from crowded tourist traps, every moment here feels like a personal discovery.

A dear friend of mine recently visited Palau with his family during their world cruise on the Victoria Cruises Residential Ship, and their stories were so captivating that I had to share them with you. If you’re craving a destination that’s truly off the beaten path, this might just be it.

The Rock Islands: Emerald Jewels on Turquoise Waters

„It felt like we were paddling through a nature documentary,” they told me after kayaking through the Rock Islands – around 300 small, jungle-covered limestone islets rising from neon-blue waters. The silence, broken only by the splash of paddles and distant birdcalls, made it feel like time had stopped.

The highlight? Jellyfish Lake – a surreal lagoon where you can swim among millions of golden jellyfish. Completely harmless, these creatures float and pulse gently around you. “It was like floating in space,” my friends said. And they meant it.

Ngardmau Waterfall: A Jungle Trek to Pure Bliss

The journey to Palau’s highest waterfall wasn’t easy, but it was worth every step. They hiked along a muddy jungle trail lined with ancient village ruins and dense tropical vegetation. The air was heavy and humid, but full of life.

Finally, they reached a natural pool where water cascaded from the cliffs above. Shoes off, feet in the cool water, and the sound of the falls all around. “It felt like the Earth was singing to us,” they said.

Milky Way Lagoon: Nature’s Own Spa Treatment

The Milky Way Lagoon was one of their favorite spots — and not just for the views. The lagoon is known for its soft, white mud that’s rich in natural minerals. Locals and visitors alike smear it over their skin for a natural exfoliating treatment.

“My skin felt smoother, softer, and somehow brighter,” my friend’s wife said. “It was like a tropical spa, right in the ocean.” They played, laughed, let the sun dry the mud on their skin, then dove back in to rinse off — glowing in every sense of the word.

Underwater Magic for First-Timers

None of them were experienced divers, but Palau turned out to be the perfect place to start. The underwater biodiversity is simply staggering: over 500 coral species, 1,300 tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays, Napoleon wrasse, and shimmering schools of tiny reef fish.

Even snorkeling near the surface was enough to feel like being inside a living aquarium. “It was unreal — like being inside a living painting,” they said.

The Palau Pledge: A Promise to Nature

Perhaps the most unique part of their trip was what happened upon arrival: every visitor must sign the Palau Pledge, a declaration printed directly in their passport. This eco-commitment reminds travelers that preserving nature is part of the journey.

Palau was the first country in the world to make environmental responsibility a legal condition of entry — and that left a deep impression on my friends. “It made us more mindful of everything we did there. We felt like guests in someone else’s sacred home.”

They Can’t Wait to Go Back — And Neither Can I

Ever since their return, Palau has been a frequent topic of conversation. Not just because it was beautiful, but because it felt like discovering a world untouched by time.

And if you ever get the chance to see it — perhaps on your own journey aboard the Victoria Cruises Residential Ship — one thing’s certain: you’ll never forget it.
