Walking the Edge of History
The highlight of visiting Vesuvius is without a doubt the trail around its massive crater. You can walk more than half of the rim, pausing for a refreshing drink as you soak in the breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples. When you finally reach the top and gaze into the depths of the crater, it’s a surreal moment. You’re standing on the edge of a volcano that once changed history forever.
Naturally, I had to make a quick call to my family and friends (yes, there’s phone signal even at the summit!) and snap a photo with the dramatic rock formations and endless sky behind me. It’s one of those moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Getting There
Reaching Vesuvius is fairly simple. At the entrance to the national park, you’ll pay a €10 entrance fee, which allows access to the final 150 meters of the trail—a gently sloping path that leads you straight to the crater edge.
