6 Must-Try Wines from Maremma, Southern Tuscany

Wines from Maremma

When people think of Tuscany, Chianti or Brunello di Montalcino usually come to mind. But there’s another side to this region – wilder, more authentic, and deeply connected to the land: Maremma. Stretching from the volcanic slopes of Monte Amiata down to the Argentario coast, this southern Tuscan wine region is where rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and the sea come together in perfect harmony.

With the help of my friend Rosella, a sommelier, I’ve selected six outstanding Maremma wines – both red and white – that capture the true identity of this land. If you’re traveling through Southern Tuscany, these bottles deserve a place on your table.

1. Montecucco Sangiovese 2018

Montecucco lies on the slopes of Monte Amiata, an ancient dormant volcano that towers at 1,738 meters. The volcanic soils, combined with thermal springs and mineral-rich layers, give the wines a unique salinity and depth. The region, officially recognized as DOCG since 2011, is almost entirely organic, with more than two-thirds of vineyards farmed sustainably.

The Montecucco Sangiovese 2018 showcases Tuscany’s signature grape in a refined way: ruby red in color, with aromas of red cherries, dried herbs, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is structured yet elegant, with mineral-driven freshness and silky tannins. This wine is a true expression of how volcanic terroir shapes Sangiovese into something both powerful and graceful.

2. Manolibera 2020 – Muralia

Muralia is a boutique estate of just 14 hectares, nestled in the quiet Tuscan countryside. Founded by Chiara and Stefano Casali in 1997, it was born from their dream of producing wines that honor the land without unnecessary artifice. Their philosophy is rooted in passion, respect for tradition, and the belief that wine should reflect authenticity.

Manolibera 2020 is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It opens with aromas of fresh red berries, wild strawberries, and a touch of blackcurrant, evolving into notes of spice, tobacco, and smoky undertones. On the palate, it is flavorful and expressive, with well-balanced tannins and a long, fruit-driven finish. It’s a wine that combines Tuscan heritage with international elegance – perfect for those who appreciate character without heaviness.

3. Morellino di Scansano Ribeo 2020

Scansano is one of Maremma’s most celebrated wine towns, home of the beloved Morellino di Scansano. The Ribeo 2020 takes its name from a local saying “beo e ribeo” – meaning “drink and drink again” – and it captures exactly that joyful spirit.

In the glass, Ribeo shines with a brilliant ruby color. The bouquet reveals violets, red cherries, and blackberries, followed by hints of mint, licorice, and anise. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet round, with a pleasant acidity that keeps it fresh and vibrant. This is a wine that pairs beautifully with rustic Tuscan dishes and is equally at home on a lively table among friends. Accessible, versatile, and utterly drinkable, it’s no wonder the locals reach for it time and time again.

4. Maremma Toscana Vermentino Chicca 2022 – Guido F. Fendi

Maremma’s white wines are increasingly making a name for themselves, and Vermentino is the star of the show. Guido Formilli Fendi, son of designer Franca Fendi and Luigi Formilli, has brought his family’s passion into winemaking, creating elegant whites that embody the beauty of Capalbio, Montemerano, and Manciano.

The Chicca 2022 is vibrant and aromatic, with delicate scents of linden blossom, fennel, and wild herbs, layered with ripe pear and white peach. The coastal breezes and cool nights of Maremma enhance its freshness, while the warm daytime sun lends ripeness and roundness. On the palate, it is crisp, refreshing, and saline, with a lingering finish that recalls the Mediterranean sea air. This is a perfect wine for seafood, summer evenings, and long conversations outdoors.

5. Maremma Syrah Mammeglio 2019

While Tuscany is best known for Sangiovese, Maremma also produces excellent international varieties, particularly Syrah. The Mammeglio 2019 is a striking example: bold, aromatic, and richly textured.

The nose is generous, with red berry compote, dried violets, vanilla, graphite, licorice, and a subtle incense note. On the palate, it is dense and concentrated, with layers of ripe fruit, velvety tannins, and a balsamic, slightly spicy finish. Despite its richness, it remains harmonious and smooth, with a calm, lingering aftertaste. This is a wine to enjoy slowly – an elegant Syrah that speaks the language of Maremma’s rugged yet refined terroir.

6. Maremma Toscana Vermentino Eraora 2021 – Le Spighe Farm

Le Spighe Farm may be small, but it has carved out a reputation for producing some of Maremma’s most distinctive whites. Their Eraora 2021 is a standout Vermentino, consistently ranked among the region’s best.

This wine offers an expressive bouquet of citrus fruits, linden flowers, and ripe yellow peaches. On the palate, it is juicy and lively, with a crisp mineral backbone and a slightly salty edge, echoing the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The finish is persistent, clean, and refreshing. Eraora is proof that Vermentino can deliver both character and finesse, making it a must-try for anyone exploring Tuscan white wines.

Tuscany and wine have a timeless love story, but Maremma is Tuscany’s wild soul. Once a land of marshes and cowboys, today it is one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions. Its wines capture both the rugged beauty of the landscape and the dedication of passionate winemakers.
