A model train museum in Florence? I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. Just steps from Santa Maria Novella station, tucked behind the huge glass doors of a former cinema, HZERO didn’t sound like something that would really grab me. But then I stepped inside.
I couldn’t believe my eyes: in front of me stretched one of the largest model railways in Europe — 280 square meters of intricate detail, with over 1,000 meters of track and 70 tiny trains zipping through a perfectly orchestrated world of lights, switches, tunnels, and sounds.

Modern train stations glow with light, little villages nestle beneath viaducts, and every scene is packed with surprises: a bicycle race, a hippie camp by a lake, paparazzi lurking on the platform edge… One moment you’ll find a wedding in progress, the next a house on fire with a miniature firetruck pulling up. And yes — there’s even a crime scene under investigation: beneath one of the bridges, a police cordon surrounds a mysterious scene. Did someone jump?
Can you spot the location?
Some landscapes are real — you’ll recognize Milan’s main station, Rapallo’s castle, or the port of Elba — while others are pure fantasy. Carefully programmed lighting, sound, and video projections bring everything to life. It’s like stepping into a motionless fairytale that somehow still moves around you.

I’ve been twice now, and still found details I’d missed the first time. This place is fascinating for all ages — both kids and adults. If you’re in Florence during summer and looking for a cool escape from the heat, this is a perfect (and air-conditioned!) choice.
HZERO isn’t just a museum. It’s a miniature universe, where imagination has no limits — and even those who think trains aren’t “their thing” will find themselves smiling.
How many of these tiny stories will you spot? And will you uncover the mystery beneath the bridge? 😉
