History

Honolulu’s history dates back thousands of years when Polynesian voyagers first arrived on the island of Oahu. In the 18th century, European explorers, including Captain James Cook, discovered Hawaii, which brought significant changes to life on the islands. Honolulu began to rapidly develop when it became the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1845 under King Kamehameha III.

The city played a pivotal role in Hawaii’s history, especially during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which led to the United States entering World War II. Today, Honolulu is the economic, cultural, and political center of Hawaii, known worldwide as a popular tourist destination.

Unforgettable Experiences

Waikiki Beach: Honolulu’s most famous beach, visited by millions of tourists each year. The palm-fringed white sandy shores and calm, shallow waters are ideal for swimming, surfing, and relaxing. Spend an afternoon exploring the shops and restaurants along Kalakaua Avenue, and don’t miss the Royal Hawaiian Center, where you can see the Moana Surfrider, Waikiki’s oldest hotel, built in 1901.

Bishop Museum: One of the finest exhibitions of Polynesian culture. Founded in 1889 to display Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the museum later expanded to include other culturally significant items and natural history specimens. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions like the Hawaiian Hall, a three-story display covering topics such as Hawaiian gods and major historical events, as well as the J. Watumull Planetarium, a 50-foot full-dome theater dedicated to astronomy.

Iolani Palace: The only royal palace in the United States, built during the time of the Hawaiian Kingdom. It served as the residence of Kings Kamehameha and Kalakaua and stands as a symbol of Hawaii’s monarchy. Today, it operates as a museum, offering insight into Hawaiian history. Several guided tour options are available, including docent-led tours and self-guided audio tours. There are also special tours that focus on specific themes, such as the Kalākaua Legacy Tour, which delves into the life and legacy of Hawaii’s last king, or the Fashion Fit for Royalty Tour, which showcases the royal family’s wardrobes and jewels. Docent-led tours (on Wednesdays and Thursdays) require advance booking.
