History
The history of Brest is closely linked to the French navy. It was already an important strategic location in the Middle Ages, but really became significant in the 17th century under Louis XIV, when it was made a major base for the French navy. During the Second World War, Brest served as a base for German submarines and suffered heavy bombing. Following reconstruction, Brest’s modern cityscape was given a fresh impetus, while retaining its deep roots in the navy.

Attractions not to be missed

One of Brest’s main attractions is the Océanopolis, which is not only an aquarium but also a marine research centre. It presents three different ecosystems: the Arctic, tropical and temperate marine worlds. Visitors can get up close to polar bears, penguins and sharks, and learn about marine life through interactive exhibits.

The Château de Brest has stood in the heart of the city for centuries and played an important role in the history of the French navy. It is now the home of the Naval Museum, where you can learn about the rich history of the French navy through model ships, weapons and other maritime relics. From the top of the castle you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the harbour and Brest Bay.

The Pont de Recouvrance, one of the highest drawbridges in France, is a dominant feature of the modern Brest skyline. This stunning engineering work links the two parts of the city and offers great views of the Penfeld River and the harbour. The walkways and parks around the bridge are ideal for a pleasant stroll or relaxation while enjoying the panoramic views of the city and the bay.

You can see the Tour Tanguy from the Brest Castle, as it stands on the opposite bank. Although the exact origins of this medieval tower are unknown, historians trace it back to the Breton War of Succession. Today it is home to the Old Brest Museum. Start on the ground floor, where you can see old town plans, photographs, postcards and a collection of coats of arms. Then head up to the first and second floors to see the museum’s celebrated diorama collection by artist Jim Sevellec.

Halfway along the Cours Dajot, you will find the Monument Américain aux Morts. This 30-metre-high tower was erected in the 1930s to commemorate the arrival of the US Navy in Europe during the First World War. The tower was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War, but was rebuilt in 1958 as an exact replica of the original monument.
