If, like me, you love a good cup of coffee, the name Illy will sound familiar. The family built one of the most renowned coffee empires in the world, beginning in 1933 when Francesco Illy founded his company in Trieste. Each generation has left its mark, shaping the brand into an international icon of Italian coffee culture.
But one member of the family chose a different path – today’s Francesco Illy, a member of the third generation, who traded the world of coffee for wine. His project, Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino, is one of the most fascinating wineries in Tuscany, where innovation and tradition meet under the Tuscan sun.

A Personal Meeting
When I asked if I might visit his vineyard, Francesco immediately smiled and said:
“Of course, Victoria. I’ll be happy to show you around. How about next Friday?”
The estate, he explained, was just a stone’s throw away from the Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo – a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and wine.

The Densest Vineyard in the World
Walking through the estate with Francesco felt surreal. The vines grow so close together it’s almost unbelievable – 62,500 vines per hectare!
For comparison, prestigious estates like Château d’Yquem cultivate around 8,000–10,000 vines per hectare. Francesco’s bold experiment, known as the Bonsai Vineyard, forces the vines to “fight harder” for nutrients. The yield is lower, but the result is grapes of extraordinary concentration and intensity.
When I tasted the wine born from this vineyard, I was struck by its richness and the exceptional length of its finish – lingering on the palate for minutes.

The Golden Cellar – An Underground Amphitheater
Francesco and his architect son created another masterpiece: The Golden Cellar. This circular, underground cellar is the result of seven years of careful planning and four years of construction, built from 750,000 bricks with entirely natural mortar.
The cellar works with gravity: grapes arrive at the top, and naturally descend through the process until the wine rests in barrels at the bottom. No machines, no pumps – everything moves organically, guided only by nature.

Wine and Philosophy
Podere Le Ripi produces around 35,000 bottles of wine each year – not a large quantity, but each one carries an extraordinary character. Francesco prefers direct relationships, offering his wines primarily to restaurants and passionate wine lovers who appreciate authenticity.
Among his creations, Amore e Follia reveals the bold character of Syrah, full-bodied and intense, while Amore e Magia carries elegance and harmony, a wine that truly feels like a spell. Lupi e Sirene reflects the mystery of Montalcino, layered and complex, with a narrative that unfolds sip by sip. And then there is the iconic Bonsai – born from the world’s densest vineyard. With its incredible concentration, it is unlike any wine you’ve ever tasted: daring, unique, and unforgettable.

As Francesco summed it up during my visit:
“People don’t come here just for the wines. They come for the beauty. It’s wild, untamed, and breathtaking.”
And he was right. Podere Le Ripi is not simply a winery; it is an experience – one that blends nature, craftsmanship, and philosophy in every glass.
