Autumn in Tuscany is the perfect time to explore rolling hills and stunning vineyards. There’s nothing better than strolling through the Chianti vineyards, visiting local wineries, and tasting the region’s finest wines.
Among them, Castello di Meleto stands out: a historic castle in the heart of Gaiole in Chianti, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The estate offers not only breathtaking architecture but also unforgettable experiences: guided tours of frescoed rooms, wine and olive oil tastings, and scenic walks where the past blends seamlessly with Tuscan culinary traditions.

The castle’s history spans centuries. Records of winemaking go back to 1256, and its modern success began in 1968 when readers of the Quattrosoldi financial magazine were invited to invest in the castle and its lands. This community initiative transformed the once-neglected estate into the thriving Castello di Meleto Società Agricola.
Dating back to the 11th century, the castle once belonged to the monks of the nearby Coltibuono Abbey. Positioned between Florence and Siena, it became a key fortress of the Chianti League. Despite 18th-century renovations, it retains its medieval charm: an irregular quadrangle, central tower, two large cylindrical towers, and northern brick galleries. The interior rooms, dating from the 1700s, are decorated with frescoes—the study is especially remarkable, featuring a painted wooden ceiling, fireplace, and a huge map of the Chianti region.

The estate spans 130 hectares, at altitudes of 250–600 meters, with diverse soils including sand, gravel, clay, alberese, and galestro. The main grape variety is Sangiovese, accompanied by Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, and Vermentino. In addition to wine, the estate produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil and wildflower honey from its own apiary.
Visitors can fully immerse themselves in Chianti culture and traditions: castle tours with tastings, light lunches, visits to the apiary, cooking classes, and scenic vineyard walks. I chose the wine tasting tour—and every moment was worth it!

Recently, Castello di Meleto won a Platinum Award at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards for its Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020. The jury said:
“A symphony of rosemary, sage, and black tea aromas unfolds on the nose, merging with cherry compote flavors on the palate. Graphite tannins, smoky acidity, and a long finish.”

Castello di Meleto is more than a winery or historic building—it’s a living, breathing place where history and the present meet in harmony with nature and gastronomy. Every vineyard walk, every sip of Chianti Classico, and every drop of fragrant olive oil captures the magic of Tuscany. It’s an experience for the eyes, the nose, and the soul—and an absolute must when visiting the region.
