A Medieval Journey Through Time
After the vibrant antique fair, Arezzo offers another unforgettable experience that feels like stepping through a medieval portal. For the past three years, every September, I return to witness the Giostra del Saracino—Arezzo’s historic jousting tournament that brings the city’s rich past vividly to life.

More than just a tournament, the Giostra del Saracino is a captivating historical reenactment that recreates the atmosphere and intensity of knights preparing to defend their city from Saracen invasions centuries ago. The majestic Piazza Grande transforms into an authentic battlefield where knights showcase their skill, strength, and precision.

Arezzo is divided into four districts, each representing ancient noble families. Two knights from each district train year-round, supported by a team of squires, musicians, and flag throwers who add color and excitement to the event.
The day begins with a grand historical parade, accompanied by trumpets and drummers, filling the streets with medieval melodies. The flags whirl through the air, and the crowd gathers in anticipation.

The climax is the thrilling joust itself, where the winning district claims the prestigious Golden Lance. The celebration continues with a parade to the cathedral, where gratitude is expressed to the Madonna del Conforto. For a brief moment, Arezzo becomes a living bridge between its glorious medieval past and present-day traditions.

For me, the Giostra del Saracino is not just a festival—it’s a time machine, a cultural treasure that reveals the heart and soul of Arezzo. It’s an unmissable experience for anyone visiting Tuscany who wants to connect deeply with history and local heritage.
