A Day in Greve in Chianti

A-Day-in-Greve-in-Chianti

Cheeses, Meats, and Ferragosto Preparations

Just a few days before Ferragosto, I found myself heading to Greve in Chianti, the heart of the Chianti region, to pick up cheeses and meats for a big family and friends gathering. My son and his wife, their extended family and friends, and the four of us – in total about twenty people – would be celebrating together. Even though I am not an Italian mamma, the locals already consider me one, and I have to say, most real Italian mammas love preparing for a feast like this.

Greve in Chianti is located less than an hour from Florence and offers everything needed for a perfect day trip. The town is surrounded by picturesque landscapes with olive groves, vineyards, rolling hills, charming churches, and traditional farmhouses. There is also an excellent selection of local products, making it a paradise for food lovers and travelers seeking authentic Italian experiences.

Our first stop was the Podere Le Fornaci farm, just outside Greve. Driving along a rustic dirt road, we were greeted by a burst of colors, cheerful flowers, and roughly a hundred goats. The farm exudes joy in cheesemaking, but it is also deeply respectful of nature and its rhythms. I first discovered their cheeses a few years ago at a local farmers’ market. Once you get used to the intense, flavorful goat cheeses, you uncover a new dimension: cheeses that are delicate yet unmistakably full of character. They are perfect for cooking or simply enjoying on their own with a fresh tomato salad, a drizzle of high-quality olive oil, or a spoonful of honey.

The farm was founded in 2000 by two young entrepreneurs who had studied the art of French goat cheesemaking before returning to Italy to create a sustainable farm using milk exclusively from their own herd. The goats are raised on mother’s milk and graze freely on the surrounding meadows. At Podere Le Fornaci, everyday life transforms into a unique experience: you can tour the farm, meet the goats, taste their artisan cheeses, or even adopt a goat to support the farm. Visiting here is a wonderful blend of culinary education and connection with nature.

Next, we headed to the center of Greve in Chianti, to Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, where Antica Macelleria Falorni has been crafting artisan cured meats since 1806. Now in its ninth generation, this historic butcher shop uses local meats, herbs, and Chianti Classico wine to create products rich in tradition and expertise. Each item reflects over two centuries of dedication to the art of pork processing. At the shop, you can both purchase and taste the finest flavors of Chianti, making it an essential stop for anyone serious about quality meats and authentic Italian gastronomy.

With our shopping complete, we were ready to host our Ferragosto celebration. The festive table included a layered tiramisu cake, one of my all-time favorite desserts. This version combines the bitter taste of espresso with moist chocolate cake layers and creamy mascarpone filling – a perfect balance of flavors and textures.

Greve in Chianti is truly a magical place to experience Italian culture, cuisine, and countryside life in just one day. From the vibrant Podere Le Fornaci farm to the historic Antica Macelleria Falorni, every stop offers a deep connection to tradition and local flavors. Preparing for Ferragosto here is more than shopping for ingredients; it is a celebration of friendship, family, and the culinary delights of the Chianti region.

The joy of gathering friends and family, cooking with high-quality local products, and sharing laughter and conversation around a long table is something that captures the very essence of Italian life. This is the spirit we celebrate during Ferragosto, where the beauty of the countryside and the excellence of local cheeses, meats, and desserts come together in perfect harmony.

Stay tuned – I’ll be sharing the recipes for the cheeses and tiramisu cake soon!
