History

The history of Willemstad dates back to the 17th century, when the Dutch colonists founded the city. Curaçao became an important maritime hub, and the port of Willemstad soon became a commercial centre for the Caribbean. The city’s prosperous development peaked in the 1700s and 1800s, when local trade was fuelled by the slave trade and the exchange of sugar and other goods. Willemstad town centre, together with parts of Punda, Otrobanda and Scharloo, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as a unique example of colonial urban architecture.

Throughout the city’s history, many different cultures and ethnic groups have left their mark, which can still be seen in the local architecture, arts and gastronomy. Dutch, Spanish, African and Caribbean influences all blend together to create a truly unique cultural experience.

Attractions

Amsterdam Fortress: one of Willemstad’s most famous and most visited historic sites and just a 5-10 minute walk from the cruise ship harbour. The building’s bright yellow façade, a characteristic of the Dutch colonial style, is a major attraction. From the panoramic views of the harbour and city to the historical artefacts, there is something for everyone. The Fort Church in the complex is well worth a visit. This Protestant church is one of the oldest buildings (1769) on the island.

Queen Emma Bridge. It connects the Punda district to the Otrobanda across the water and sways ever so gently as pedestrians walk across it – a journey that takes just a few minutes. With stunning waterfront views, it’s the perfect place to take a souvenir photo. Travellers also enjoy watching the bridge open to allow boats to cross the bay.
